Flint Hills Rodeo Commemorative Belt Buckles

In 1987, the Flint Hills Rodeo Association celebrated its 50th anniversary by establishing a 10-year series of commemorative belt buckles.

Flint Hills area artists created the designs for the buckles, which celebrate and honor traditional rodeo events, scenes, and founders of the Flint Hills Rodeo.

Each year during the series, a limited number of buckles were produced, each individually numbered. Below are images and descriptions of each of the ten buckles.

Limited quantities of some buckles are still available.

The oldest consecutive professional rodeo in Kansas was founded and staged in 1937 at Strong City by members of the E.C. Roberts family.

The rodeo association was later incorporated. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1987.

Second in a series of limited edition belt buckles from the Flint Hills Rodeo.

Pictured is Gerald Roberts, hometown Strong City cowboy, competing in saddle bronc riding.

Gerald was World Champion All-Around Cowboy in 1942 and 1948.

Third in a series of limited edition Flint Hills Rodeo belt buckles, it pictures hometown Strong City cowboy Ken Roberts doing what he did best. Ken was World Champion Bull Rider in 1943, 44, & 45.
Fourth in the series of limited edition Flint Hills Rodeo belt buckles, this buckle features E.C. Roberts, founder of the Flint Hills Rodeo and dean of the Roberts rodeo family. E.C. was a prominent stock contractor and accomplished rodeo pickup-man.
Steer wrestling is the featured event in our 5th limited edition Flint Hills Rodeo belt buckle. Pictured is champion rodeo cowboy Joel Edmondson from Eureka, KS.

Joel was PRCA World Champion Steer Wrestler in 1983 and has been a long-time contestant and event winner at the Flint Hills Rodeo. He frequently attends the Flint Hills High School Rodeo and hazes for the steer wrestling contestants.

An important part of most rodeos are the specialty acts and trick riders.

The 1992 limited edition buckle features a trick rider who was special to the Flint Hills Rodeo, Margie Roberts Hart, a member of the famed Roberts rodeo family, was an accomplished trick rider and rodeo contestant who performed at major rodeos for over 25 years.

Our 7th Flint Hills Rodeo belt buckle features bareback riding. The Flint Hills Rodeo has always been known for its rough stock.

Smokey, Spanish Forks, Hard Twist, Devils Tower, and Bay Megs are just a few of the all-time great bareback horses to perform at the Flint Hills Rodeo.

Medicine Lodge artist, Earl Kuhn, depicts one of rodeo's most challenging and exciting events, the wild horse race.

Howard Roberts of Strong City is generally acknowledged as the best of the muggers in early Flint Hills Rodeo wild horse races.

Barrel racing is featured on our 9th annual Flint Hills Rodeo belt buckle.

Barrel racing is always exciting and challenging at the Flint Hills Rodeo and has proved to be one of our events with the highest number of entries.

Our 1996 buckle marks the 10th and final buckle in our Flint Hills Rodeo collectors series.

To end the series we are honoring an important part of all rodeos - clowns and bullfighters. Rodeo clowns entertain spectators, protect cowboys, and are a part of most people's rodeo memories.
